Exercises to Help You Recover After Knee Replacement

July 21, 2023

Recovery from knee replacement surgery is a transformative process that requires time, patience, effort, and focus on rehabilitation. Engaging in exercises is a crucial aspect of recovery after knee replacement surgery.

If you are considering doing exercises to help restore your range of motion, strength, and flexibility after a knee replacement, this blog is for you.

Let’s talk about some effective exercises to help you recover after a knee replacement surgery and where you can go for outstanding physical therapy in Berea, KY.

Early Postoperative Exercises

The early post-op exercises will help improve blood circulation in your legs and feet, preventing the formation of blood clots. These exercises will also strengthen your muscles and improve movement in the knee joint.

The following are some exercises you can follow shortly after your surgery to speed up recovery and diminish your post-op pain.

Quadriceps Sets

Tighten your thigh muscles and straighten your knee. Hold this position for 5 to 10 seconds and repeat the exercise until your thigh muscles are fatigued.

Straight Leg Raise

Tighten your thigh muscles and straighten your knee fully. Lift the straight leg several inches and hold for 5 to 10 seconds.

Repeat the exercises until you feel fatigued. You can also do this leg raise while sitting.

Ankle Pumps

Contract your calf and shin muscles and move your foot up and down rhythmically. Do this for 2 to 3 minutes and then repeat.

Continue doing ankle pumps until your full recovery and all the swelling has subsided.

Sitting Supported Knee Bends

Sit on a bed or chair with your thigh supported. Place your foot behind the heel of your operated knee to provide support to the operated knee. Slowly bend your knee as far as possible and hold for 5 to 10 seconds.

Repeat the exercise until you can completely bend your knee or feel fatigued.

Advanced Exercises

Once you can walk a short distance and take a few steps, increase your activity. To fully recover your knee, perform the exercises mentioned below.

Standing Knee Bends

Stand straight using walkers or crutches. Lift the thigh of your operated knee and bend your knee as much as you can. Hold the knee in this position for at least 5 to 10 seconds, and then straighten your leg with the heel touching the floor first.

Assisted Knee Bends

Lie on your back and place a towel on your operated knee. Drop the towel on your foot. Slowly bend your knee and apply gentle pressure through the towel to increase knee bending. Hold your operated knee in this position for 5 to 10 seconds.

You can also place a lightweight around your ankle and repeat the above two exercises. However, it is suggested to consult your surgeon or a physical therapist before trying any new exercises or stretches after a knee replacement.
