Pediatric Milestones

Pediatric milestones are developmental markers that pediatricians use to track a child's physical, mental, and emotional development. There are several key milestones that doctors look for, including sitting up independently, crawling, walking, and talking. While all children reach these milestones at different rates, it is crucial to monitor their development to ensure they are on track.

Pediatric milestones help doctors identify potential delays or problems. For example, if a child does not sit up by 6 months old, this may be a sign of a muscle or nerve problem.

Similarly, if a child does not start talking by 18 months old, this may indicate a speech delay. By monitoring pediatric milestones, doctors can promote healthy childhood development and catch any potential issues early on.

What Milestones to Look Out For

Every parent looks forward to their child hitting key milestones, such as sitting up on their own, or taking their first steps. However, it can be hard to know exactly when these milestones should be happening. Here is a guide to some of the key milestones that you can expect your child to hit in the first few years of life.

Around 6 months old, most babies will be able to sit up unaided for short periods of time. Around 9 months old, they should be able to pull themselves up to a standing position and cruise around furniture. At around 1 year old, they should take their first steps, and by 18 months old, they should be able to walk independently.

Of course, every child develops at their own pace, so don't worry if your child isn't hitting these milestones exactly on schedule. However, if you are concerned about your child's development, it is always best to consult with a medical professional.

Pediatric Milestone Checklist

It's so exciting to watch your baby grow and hit all their milestones! From that first smile to their first steps, every milestone is special. However, it can be hard to keep track of all the different milestones your baby should be hitting.

That's why we've created a pediatric milestone checklist, so you can keep track of your little one's development. Our checklist includes all the major milestones, from birth to 60 months. Plus, we've included some fun bonus milestones for you to watch out for, like first words and first steps.

So, whether you're a first-time parent or a seasoned pro, our milestone checklist is a great way to make sure you don't miss a moment of your child's incredible journey.

Select your child’s age to see what developmental milestones they should be hitting!

When to Contact a Provider

So, when should you contact a healthcare provider about delayed milestones? The American Academy of Pediatrics provides the following guidelines:

  • If your child is not yet sitting independently by 6 months old
  • If your child is not yet standing by 12 months old
  • If your child is not yet walking by 18 months old
  • If your child is not yet talking in phrases or sentences by 24 months old

Of course, these are just general guidelines. Every child develops at their own pace, so it is important to trust your instincts as a parent. If you are concerned about your child's development, don't hesitate to contact your healthcare provider for guidance.

H2 Health Kids and Great Strides Rehabilitation is proud to be leading pediatric healthcare providers in their communities. We are committed to helping children reach their full potential.
