At Great Strides, we are dedicated to helping children find their voice and communicate with confidence. Our pediatric speech therapy program supports children from birth to age 21 with developmental diagnoses, helping them overcome challenges in speech, language, and communication. Whether a child is struggling with articulation, understanding language, social skills, or feeding difficulties, our speech therapists use fun, evidence-based techniques to build essential skills. A Day At Therapy
Do you wonder what your child will do in speech therapy? Nervous about dropping them off for a lengthy appointment and missing out on what your kiddo is doing? Hear from our specialized pediatric speech therapists about how they structure their patient's day and how they approach pediatric speech therapy,
Sydney, SLP-CF in Jacksonville, FL
- How do you structure your therapy sessions?
Each therapy session follows a carefully designed flow that begins with a warm-up activity to engage my patients. I alternate between structured exercises and more natural, conversation-based activities, which helps maintain both focus and enthusiasm throughout our time together. My caseload primarily consists of patients working to improve their expressive and receptive language skills. Many of my clients face challenges with fundamental communication tasks, such as identifying everyday objects. We break these skills down into manageable steps, celebrating each milestone along the way. - What is your favorite part about working with kids?
What truly makes this work meaningful is witnessing those breakthrough moments. There's nothing quite like seeing a patient's face light up when they successfully master a skill they've been working so hard to achieve. These small victories often represent huge leaps in their communication journey, and being part of that transformation is incredibly rewarding. - How do you make therapy a positive experience for your patients?
Before each patient leaves, we take a moment to celebrate their progress – whether it's mastering a challenging sound or completing a complex communication task. I always make sure to highlight specific achievements from our session, which not only boosts their confidence but also helps them remember what we practiced. Some of my most memorable moments come from these end-of-session victories. Just last week, a young patient who had been struggling with certain sounds suddenly nailed them perfectly while playing our farewell game. The pure joy on their faces – and their parents' tears of happiness – reminded me exactly why I love this work. I've developed a routine of ending each session with what I call our "success summary." We quickly review what we accomplished, discuss their favorite part of our time together, and I send them off with a simple practice activity for home. This way, every patient leaves not just with new skills, but with a sense of pride and progress. It's amazing how a high five and specific praise about their hard work can turn even a challenging session into a positive experience they'll remember.
