Exercises After Knee Replacement Surgery

Recovering mobility after knee replacement surgery is a significant phase of the healing process. This period is crucial not only to the success of your surgery but also to the longevity of your knee implant. It involves a series of rehabilitation steps, including physical therapy and exercise.

At the Virginia Center for Spine & Sports Rehab, we understand the importance of a carefully structured post-surgery exercise regimen. Here is a guide to some gentle exercises for and after knee replacement you can start to enhance your recovery process.

The Importance of Post-Surgery Exercises

After knee replacement surgery, it is natural to experience pain, swelling, and reduced mobility in the knee. However, starting gentle exercises early in your recovery can significantly improve your outcomes. These exercises help by:

  • Enhancing Blood Circulation: This minimizes the risk of blood clots.
  • Strengthening Muscles: Strong muscles support and stabilize the new knee.
  • Improving Flexibility and Range of Motion: Essential for regaining your knee’s functional movements.

Always remember, the goal is to recover at your own pace. It is important to listen to your body and the guidance of your physical therapist.

The Three Phases of Recovery After Knee Replacement Surgery

When recovering knee replacement surgery, there are three stages of physical therapy:

While in the hospital (1 to 3 days following surgery): Prior to discharge, you will work with a physical therapist who will show you activities you will need to do at home. These include using a walker, getting into and out of bed, and using the restroom safely. These ensure you know how to move around as necessary in the beginning days of recovery when you return home. Also, you may begin mild exercises aimed at improving your knee’s range of motion (ROM) and strength.

At home physical therapy (2 or 3 weeks after surgery): While continuing your ROM and strength exercises, your knee will become more stable. You will be able to do more exercises during rehab sessions and at home. Plus, you will master walking with a cane until you won’t need one.

Outpatient therapy (up to 4 months following surgery): During this important phase, the exercises you perform with your physical therapist will help strengthen your muscles and improve your flexibility and cardiovascular capacity, so you can get back to normal activity.

Gentle Exercises to Begin With

  1. Ankle Pumps

Ankle pumps are a simple yet effective way to improve blood circulation and reduce swelling. Lie on your back and move your ankle up and down, repeating this motion 10 to 15 times on each foot.

  1. Knee Straightening Exercises

This exercise helps in strengthening the quadriceps muscles and improving knee extension. While sitting in a chair, slowly straighten your leg and hold the position for 5 to 10 seconds before lowering it. Repeat 10 to 15 times per leg.

  1. Leg Slides

Leg slides help in regaining knee flexion. Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly bend your operated knee by sliding your foot along the bed towards you. Slide back to the starting position. Repeat 10 to 15 times.

  1. Seated Knee Bends

While sitting on a chair, gently slide your foot back under the chair as far as comfortable, bending the knee. Hold for 5 seconds, then slide your foot forward again. Perform 10 to 15 repetitions.

  1. Assisted Knee Bends

Using a towel, loop it under your foot (while lying down) and gently pull towards you to assist in bending the knee. Hold this position for 5 to 10 seconds, then release. Aim for 10 to 15 repetitions.
