HULSEY TRACTION
At Hulsey Physical Therapy, we help patients in Commerce and Greenville, TX through traction and spinal decompression therapy. This is a therapeutic technique used to gently decompress the spine and relieve pressure on joints, discs, and surrounding soft tissues for patients. Decompression traction is commonly incorporated into a personalized physical therapy plan to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support healing, especially for conditions affecting the neck or lower back.
Patients receiving Hulsey traction often experience reduced pain, improved flexibility, and greater ease with daily activities. Traction is used selectively and safely by trained physical therapists to complement active rehabilitation and help patients return to work, recreation, and everyday life with improved comfort and confidence.
What is Traction?
Spinal Decompression Therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. This procedure is called nonsurgical decompression therapy (as opposed to surgical spinal decompression, such as laminectomy and microdiscectomy). Decompression therapy is applied with the goals of relieving pain and promoting an optimal healing environment for bulging, degenerating, or herniated discs. Also used to help relax and alleviate pain from spastic or tense neuromuscular structures.
Traction works by applying controlled, gentle forces to stretch the spine, creating space between vertebrae and helping to reduce compression on nerves and discs. This can improve circulation, decrease muscle tension, and promote more comfortable movement. When combined with therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and other modalities, traction can enhance treatment outcomes and support long-term spinal health.
What Does Taping Help With?
Decompression traction may be appropriate for patients experiencing spinal or nerve-related pain, including:
- Neck pain and cervical spine stiffness
- Low back pain and lumbar spine pain
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Degenerative disc disease
- Sciatica and nerve-related leg pain
- Pinched nerves (radiculopathy)
- Facet joint dysfunction
- Spinal compression–related pain
- Muscle spasms associated with spinal conditions
- Postural-related neck or back pain
Traction is most effective when spinal compression is contributing to pain or movement limitations and is typically combined with exercise and hands-on therapy for optimal results.
