Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction
TMJ dysfunction is usually diagnosed by a doctor or dentist. Our physical therapists, on the other hand, can review your medical history and perform tests to determine whether TMJ dysfunction is causing your pain.
TMJ pain is commonly caused by teeth misalignment, gum chewing, arthritis, teeth grinding, or jaw injury.
TMJ disorder symptoms include:
- Earaches
- Jaw ache
- Pain while eating and chewing
- Jaws clenched
- Headaches
- Muscle pain in the jaw
- Lockjaw
- Headaches in the temples
Do you have any of these symptoms? Please contact our Oklahoma physical therapy clinic for pain relief if this is the case.
What can you expect from Physical Therapy for TMJ Dysfunction?
Your neck, shoulders, and thoracic spine will be thoroughly examined during your initial appointment at our Oklahoma physical therapy clinic. This examination will determine whether those structures are causing your symptoms.
Our physical therapist will assess your jaw mobility and work to relieve any neck and head muscle tension. As a result of our treatments, you will regain normal function. Therapy will also improve the way your jaw muscles and joints interact.
One of our trained physical therapists will create a personalized care plan for you based on your needs and symptoms. Your treatment plan may include jaw exercises, soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, myofascial methods, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound.
